The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are finally upon us and actually started on Wednesday when the women’s soccer tournament got underway. The Team USA women’s soccer team is the 7/4 favorite to win the gold medal and rallied back for a 4-2 win over France in their opener after trailing 2-0. 49ers Big Favorites to Defend NFC West Title in 2012

The San Francisco 49ers could not have played much better during the regular season in 2011 at 13-3 and were a few bad special teams plays away from making it to the Super Bowl for the first time since they won it in 1995. The good news is San Francisco is still stacked in terms of talent and has probably gotten even better on paper offensively with the addition of wide receivers Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. 49ers quarterback Alex Smith showed vast improvement last year, completing a career-best 61 percent of his passes for a career-high 3,144 yards with 17 touchdowns. However, perhaps the most impressive stat working in Smith’s favor was his NFL-low five interceptions for QBs playing in more than nine games. With an improved offense and one of the league’s best defenses, San Francisco is an overwhelming favorite to repeats as NFC West champions at -250 in addition to being 11/2 to win the NFC Championship and 10/1 to win Super Bowl XLVII. Steelers, Ravens Expected to Contend for AFC North Title

The Baltimore Ravens went 6-2 in their first and last eight games of the season en route to posting a 12-4 record, winning the AFC North division and earning the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. Ravens running back Ray Rice was their workhorse and focal point of the offense as he rushed for 1,364 yards and racked up 2,068 yards of total offense to go along with 15 touchdowns. They also had a top-notch defense that was ranked in the Top 5 in all the major defensive categories. Baltimore managed to win its first playoff game at home against the Houston Texans 20-13 but then proceeded to lose a heartbreaker to the New England Patriots 23-20 on the road in the AFC Championship Game, preventing the team from reaching the Super Bowl. Eagles Favored to Win NFC East, Giants Second Choice

Last year, the regular season for the New York Giants was full of ups and downs, but it did not matter as they got hot in the playoffs and ended the year with the Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl XLVI champions. They started out hot, going 6-2 in their first eight games but went on to lose five of their next six. With their backs against the wall, they were then forced to win both of their final two regular-season games to win the NFC East and qualify for the postseason at 9-7. Read more…

Red Sox, Rangers Battle on ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball

Two struggling American League teams will square off on ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball when the Texas Rangers host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series. The Red Sox (48-48) are in a much different position though — currently sitting in last place in the AL East — while the Rangers (56-38) still lead the AL West by five games despite losing two of three on the road to the second-place Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. Patriots Favored to Win AFC East Over Bills, Jets and Dolphins

The New England Patriots recorded an AFC-best 13-3 record last season behind future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, who threw for a career-high 5,235 yards. Brady also benefited greatly from All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski until he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. Gronkowski put up historic numbers for his position, recording 90 catches for 1,327 yards and set an NFL record for a tight end with 18 touchdowns. Read more…

Will Peyton Manning Lead Broncos to AFC West Title Post-Tebow?

The Denver Broncos started last season 1-4 under quarterback Kyle Orton but turned things around in Week 7 after head coach John Fox made the switch to Tim Tebow, who led them to seven wins in eight games, which was good enough to win the AFC West. The Broncos are hoping another QB switch to future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning will prevent them from getting off to a another slow start and help them reach their ultimate goal of winning another Super Bowl title. Tebow’s departure to the New York Jets via trade could only be justified by bringing in a replacement of Manning’s caliber, and signing him to a five-year deal worth $96 million shows the team is committed to winning with him despite the fact that he is coming off a severe neck injury. Denver is a slight favorite to win the AFC West this year at +170, 15/2 to win the AFC Championship and 16/1 to win Super Bowl XLVII. Read more…

SEC Looking to Win Seventh Straight BCS National Title

Last year, the SEC continued its annual dominance of college football, winning the national championship for the sixth year in a row. The Alabama Crimson Tide went 11-1 during the regular season, with their only loss coming to their SEC rivals the LSU Tigers in a 9-6 defensive grind in early November. The Tide turned though as they took full advantage of their shot at revenge, shutting out LSU 21-0 in the BCS title game. While Alabama did lose star running back Trent Richardson to the NFL along with seven other players, the team is still returning seven offensive starters, including starting quarterback A.J. McCarron, as well as four defensive starters. Bama is expected to be a major contender for another national championship this year at 11/2 odds and is one of two co-favorites to win the SEC at 11/5 co-favorite. Read more…

Youkilis Returns to Boston as White Sox Visit Red Sox
